It's a biiiiiig country out here Mum! DAY ONE... crumping up the immense flat valley of the Waimakiriri...as Ian said "New Zealand is the world centre of diversity of round boulders"..or I think that's what he said.
The beech canopy...all that stands between a ferny garden and the howling bare pointy-stoned wilderness...
DAY 3. Boys! "Dig the sub-zero water on your feet Ian!" "What feet? Are we standing in water?"
...we followed the mighty Taipo Iti into a ravishing gorge. How much savage grandeur can two guys stand? (actually this is a trick photograph, Ian)
...surmounting ice walls...(I am NOT posing!)
Until we crossed the mighty pass...object of all our efforts...frozen to the bone... horizontal hail blasting our faces (just a tiny bit)...
DAY 4. Morning. We can still walk! (amazing) Sox on for the long stroll down the Taipo.
DAY 5. Ian on top of the world...
mmm lunch..the happiest time of all...
...that scintillating one quarter of apple per day made it all worthwhile.
